Paint FX: Photo Effects Editor

Paint FX: Photo Effects Editor is a recently updated Universal app that does exactly what the name says — it lets you paint effects on a photo. This video does a great job showing the main features of the app.

There are a wide array of effects that you can choose from, and by changing the brush settings (in most cases opacity, edge, and size, and occasionally other options) you can achieve a wide variety of results.

The mask feature is really nice for letting you easily work specific parts of your image. For more detail about using the mask feature you can watch this video.

Here are some shots I created using the app.

There are a few things I’d like to see improved in future versions of the app. Currently on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 the maximum size is 2048×2048. It is half that on prior iOS devices. As always, I wish apps would all support full resolution of the devices.

There are so many effects that you can spend a bit of time trying to look through them all to find the one you wanted (this gets faster as you get used to the app). It would be nice if you could have favorites to save yourself a bit of time.

The undo button was nice, but it seemed to have some quirks when using the mask. An example of this would be applying an effect over the entire mask and then clicking undo. Sometimes I would see a full black region appear where the mask had been. Other times I’d get messages telling me there was no mask. If I just clicked to erase or paint a bit more mask the image things would return to normal.

One feature I’d really like to have in the future would be a mask inverter button. Currently you can paint the mask to cover a region and apply an effect, but you can’t flip the mask so that you can easily apply a different effect to the other portion of the image.

Overall this is a solid app for painting effects on your shots. There are some really nice works of art on the Facebook page for the app, as well as the product site so you can get a feel for what others are doing with it.

Paint FX: Photo Effects Editor is currently $1.99 on iTunes.
