Pop & Mob, A Good Mid-Week Sale

Two apps that I enjoy are both on sale for just $0.99 in the middle of the week (or almost the middle). Popsicolor and lo-mob.

Popsicolor is a Universal app that I use whenever I want to make a nifty illustration with the watercolor look.

• Turn Your Photos Into Stylish Illustrations
• Amazing Watercolor & Ink Effects
• Yes! High Resolution Output*
• Universal App for iPhone & iPad
• Share on Instagram, Twitter, etc.
• From the creator of Percolator for iOS

NYPD, Ink.

An app that I use almost daily for my ‘shot of the day’ on my iPhone is lo-mob.

Have you ever experiment with your old analog cameras? Have you put a 35mm film in a medium format body? Have you ever tried to achieve Through The Viewfinder (TTV) photography by shooting a picture with a camera through the viewfinder of another?

Take a picture or choose one from your library, Lo-Mob will process it, and give you a preview of all its 39 filters, at once.

You’ll be able to tweak the filter you chose, altering the frame, the vignetting, the color filter or the blurring.

Already Thursday? Time Flies. Updates Arrive!

This week is flying by. I keep wanting to do a post about this, that, or the other thing, but the real world seems to keep me far too busy. If anyone ever wants to do one (or more) guest posts, feel free to drop me a line. No need to be a professional…just someone that feels like posting about most anything. I pay a total sum of $0. 🙂

Anyway, here are a few updates from the past week that are worth noticing.

FX Photo Studio for the iPhone is free for about the next 12 hours or so. A nice photo effects app that is usually $2. It was also updated earlier today with lots of enhancements – including full resolution on iPhone 5. My iPhone 5 is purring like a kitten.

Percolator, a very unique Universal app, is on sale for $2. It’s usually $3. Several new features were added in the recent update. I really like the new Tripstamatic and Charmed settings. I wish Charmed could be even wobblier!

Popsicolor is another unique (and Universal) app that lets you create a variety of ink/watercolor effects. Several new settings have been added to this release that allow you to get a bit more artistic with the drips and intensity of the image. It’s Thursday and the entire week has been odd, but I noticed the entire description of the app in iTunes is currently in Chinese! Guess a switch got flipped somewhere. In any event, you may not be able to read the description, but it’s a great app. I’m no Picasso, but I created this flower. Perhaps I should have added some hands – then it would probably be worth more!

What a crazy day.

Popsicolor Pops with Ink and Gradients in Latest Update

Popsicolor was updated to version 2 today, and the update is free for all the version 1 users. Good deal. It’s a major update with many new features. Here is the listing of what’s new:

★ Introducing Ink for incredible line drawing effects!
★ More Colors — New Warm & Cool color sets
★ More Focus options — Before there were 3, but now there are 16
★ More Gradient options — Before there was just 1, but now there are 24, including Duotone
★ More control with optional borders and the new auto-enhance feature
★ More sharing: Instagram (with built in square crop tool!), Twitter, Facebook, and more.
★ Speed, bug fixes, and other improvements

The ink and the new gradient options are my favorite (superb) additions to this app. I created this from a photo I took of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in NYC when I was up there earlier this month. You can click on it to see the larger version on Flickr.

You can watch a nice video of Popsicolor 2 on the Popsicolor website. I really like this app. I’m hoping in the next version we get a bit more control over the amount of ink that is used. As with so many apps, you always want one more thing 🙂

Popsicolor is currently $1.99 on iTunes. [download]

Popsicolor Pops With Color

Percolator is one of the most unique apps out there, and now the developer brings another interesting Universal app called Popsicolor. The GUI is very simple. You select a photo and the water color painting begins. You then have the option of choosing the colors at the top and bottom of the image, along with choosing the overall focus of the image (minimal, natural, or bold).

To see it in action the video on the Popsicolor Home Page gives you a good feel for exactly how it works – I even enjoyed the music that went with it.

A few interesting things about the app. Depending on how you hold it you will or will not get drippy paint on your image. Also, if you click just the same color again the drips will be different every time. I’m not entirely sure if that is due to phone motion or not…but it was fun to watch it. The names of the colors is fun (things such as Lime, Color, Bubble Gum, etc.) as are the pop up messages as the app is processing the image – very similar to the funny messages in Percolator.

This is a version 1.0, so there might still be a few bugs. It crashed on me once after about twenty images. And as with many apps, I wish it was a bit faster processing (guess I’ll have to wait for my iPhone 5!). The apps that deal with full resolution photos on the iPhone 4s really get to deal with a lot of pixels.

Here are a few shots that I created with Popsicolor. A few more in this set I put on Flickr.

Popsicolor 4 Popsicolor 2
Popsicolor 1 Popsicolor 6

This is definitely an app to grab if you like to create this sort of art. Using this app along with others such as Percolator, Image Blender, etc., will let you create some really nifty stuff.

Currently Popsicolor is just $0.99 on iTunes. [download]
